Overview

Cape Roca or Cabo da Roca in Portuguese, a rugged headland that marks the westernmost point of mainland Europe, is situated within the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park in Portugal. This dramatic landscape, where towering cliffs drop steeply into the Atlantic Ocean, is a testament to nature's power and beauty. The site is marked by a lighthouse, a monument bearing a poignant inscription by Portuguese poet Luís de Camões describing it as "where the land ends and the sea begins." The combination of its geographic significance and breathtaking views makes Cabo da Roca a popular spot for visitors from around the world.

Cabo da Roca's latitude and longitude coordinates (38°46'51"N 9°29'56"W) are inscribed on a stone plaque at the monument site, making for a popular photo opportunity. The area is also known for its rich biodiversity, particularly the variety of bird species that can be observed.

History

The lighthouse at Cabo da Roca, built in the 18th century, is one of the oldest functioning lighthouses in Portugal. It has been guiding ships navigating the treacherous waters off the Portuguese coast for hundreds of years.

Warnings

The cliffs are dangerous, and there are no barriers in some areas. Keep a safe distance from the edge. The weather can be unpredictable, with strong winds and fog common, even in summer. Dress accordingly. Check the opening times for the lighthouse if you're interested in a visit, as it's not always accessible to the public.
